The past five years have witnessed a rural revival movement known as "the Beautiful Countryside". Initially launched by the Xi regime and quickly embraced by architects, artists and public intellectuals. Yi Gu of University of Toronto examines how the campaign has led to heated debates on what "beauty" means not only in rural China, but in our environmentally endangered world in general.
