Performance Notes

× The wonderful Canadian singer/songwriter Laura Smith has been a brilliant voice in the world folk-music firmament since her debut in the 1970's - in fact, her 1999 recording of 'MY BONNY' with the great Irish band, The Chieftains, won the LiveIreland Award for Best Celtic Tune of the Decade (2000-2010). Her 1994 album Between the Earth and My Soul received two East Coast Music Awards. Laura has been Juno-nominated; her 1994 album Between The Earth and My Soul received two East Coast Music Awards. She has two Geminis to her credit and recently she was awarded an Honorary Doctorate from Mt. St. Vincent University for her songwriting. But despite all the folk music glory, Laura Smith has always had a jazzy dimension to her singing. Her current tour and this stop at Cobourg's LOFT will include a folk balled set and a set of jazz standards with accompaniment by San Murata and Tony Quarrington. Tokyo-born violinist SAN MURATA is an exponent of the 'jazz fiddle' and puts me in mind of Stephane Grappelli. He has played with many of the finest in the Canadian jazz world including Neil Swainson, Reg Schwager, and Mark Kieswetter all at The Loft. San has had long residences at Prego Ristorante, the Terra Cotta Inn, the Palms (Port Hope), and the Dominion on Queen and he has played many festivals. He has a playful, melodic approach to swing and standards, and has released many CDs as a player and an album of original compositions for piano with Mark Kieswetter on keys. San has played at Fete de Chanson in Burgundy, France and winters in Japan where he plays in jazz clubs almost every night. The veteran guitarist/producer TONY QUARRINGTON has fifteen jazz recordings as leader or co-leader, and appears on a hundred other albums. He won a 1999 Producer's JUNO for his work on Willie P. Bennett's Heartstrings. He has recorded with such jazz icons as Jane Bunnett, Pat LaBarbera, Don Thompson, Joanne Brackeen, Don Francks, and Peter Appleyard. He appears frequently at such jazz festivals as TD Downtown Jazz in Toronto, Prince Edward County, and Barrie Jazz and Blues Festival.
