Ken Prue & Saskia Tomkins present George Crotty, Four String Nomad Monday, June 25 at 7:00 PM The Loft Cinema $20. + sc Cello, Cello! Live Concert and an artful film George Crotty is a crossover cellist from Toronto, now living in New York City. He traces his musical lineage to fiddlers in County Clare, Ireland, and a family of Jewish musicians descended from Felix Mendelssohn. A recent graduate of the Berklee College of Music, Crotty is forging a new linguistic path for the cello by integrating elements from Eastern, Celtic, and Jazz traditions. He has recently performed domestically and abroad with oud/violin virtuoso, Simon Shaheen, American fiddle guru, Darol Anger. and jazz legend Paquito D'Rivera. George is currently a member of the Canadian Arabic Orchestra, and New York's experimental quintet, 2Birds Band. An active session player, he has also stepped into the role of producer, releasing 2Birds Band's String Groover, and Vidi Aquam, a collaboration with Canadian cellist, Kirk Starkey. George plays a CR Electric Cello made by Ned Steinberger. Click to listen to George's exotic cello : https://www.georgecrotty.com/four-string-nomad/

This evening's performance will consist of an hour of George Crotty's thoroughly unique and original cello stylings as well as an interpretation of J.S.Bach's Cello Suites. Following George's live performance we will follow American cellist Dane Johansen who, with a cello on his back, walks the famous pilgrim's path, The Camino de Santiago, in the documentary film Strangers On The Earth. In director Tristan Cook's impressionistic documentary, we accompany cellist Dane Johansen, who, with a cello on his back, walks the 700 km of the Camino that beloved Ontario fiddler, Oliver Schroer, walked in 2004 with his wife and children and a pack of portable recording equipment to produce the beautiful album, Camino. Strangers On The Earth isn't a precious film: Johansen, for instance, is a bit whiny at the outset. His idea was to record Bach's Cello Suites in 36 ancient churches along the Camino but ends up giving public concerts instead. It is chillier in Spain than he imagined it would be. It's hard to play his instrument with bone-cold fingers, and he wants some time alone. Cook's unpredictable and reflective work, set to a brooding solo-cello score featuring those Bach Cello Suites and filled with whatever metaphors you need. Take this trip and this marvelous film, at your own pace. Monday, June 25 at 7:00 PM at The Loft Cinema, $20. + sc
