The last time he was here (July 2017) he shared the stage with pianist Bernie Senensky and Joel Quarrington in a show they called 'TWO BASS HIT.' Dave was educated as both a jazz and classical player. His elegant performances with guitarist Lenny Breau are legendary. Dave's professional relationship with jazz piano giant Oscar Peterson spanned three decades during which he played with the Oscar Peterson Trio all over the world. One of Dave's most popular musical combinations is his own Quintet, an ensemble firmly rooted in the be-bop tradition, and focusing on the material of Horace Silver and Charles Mingus. In the fall of 2009, Dave released, Mean What You Say ,an independently release album produced by bassist Robert Occhipinti and featuring Robi Botos,Frank Botos, and Kevin Turcotte. In 2009, Dave performed as part of a 16-piece orchestra accompanying award-winning choreographer Twyla Tharp’s latest Broadway-bound dance work: “Come Fly With Me” – The Music of Frank Sinatra. In 2011, Young released Aspects of Oscar with his quintet featuring Dave Young, Kevin Turcotte, Reg Schwager, Robi Botos and Terry Clarke. The album was nominiated for a JUNO Award. As an educator, Dave Young has taught at numerous music seminars and jazz clinics and is currently a faculty member of The University of Toronto and has been Musician in Residence at St. Francis Xavier University in Antigonish, Nova Scotia, conducting bass master classes and performing. Steve Holt was a piano prodigy at the age of four. He began his professional career at the age of 17, playing the clubs in and around Montreal. Since that time, Steve has built an international reputation as one of Canada's premiere jazz pianists having worked with the likes of Archie Shepp, Larry Coryell, Eddie Henderson, Pat Labarbera, James Moody, Eddie "Cleanhead" Vinson, and Michel Urbaniak. Steve studied jazz piano with Armas Maiste , graduating with distinction in 1981 as McGill's first-ever Bachelor of Music majoring in Jazz performance. During this period Steve travelled regularly to New York to study with world-renowned pianist Kenny Barron. Also in 1981, Steve was appointed to McGill's Faculty of Music as instructor of Jazz improvisation. In 1983, Steve produced his debut recording, The Lion's Eyes - a trio on A side and sextet on B side - the sextet including Michel Donato, Bass; Camil Belisle, Drums; Bob Mover, Alto Saxophone; Steve Hall, Tenor Saxophone, and Charles Ellison, Trumpet. The LP won critical acclaim around the world, and was a Juno nominee for best Jazz album that year. Steve spent several years as an active studio musician, and performer/arranger for radio and television commercials. Steve Holt has left the big city for the Village of Warkworth where he operates an intimate jazz club and health emporium - The Natural. Dave Young recently performed there with Steve. Dave Young, Kevin Turcotte (trumpet) and Reg Schwager (guitar) return to The Loft on April 27, 2019 for afternoon master classes and an evening concert. Tickets go on sale before Christmas 2018.
