Ken Prue/A Loft Production presents: Paul Novotny and Robi Botos in concert

Tuesday July 4 at 8:00 pm - Jazz

Venue: Concert Hall at Victoria Hall

Paul Novotny and Robi Botos were introduced in 1999 through a letter writing campaign intending to persuade the department of Canadian immigration to accept the Botos family (Romani) as Canadian citizens, based on cultural merit. Paul was attuned to the difficulties of immigration and endorsed the Botos family. Soon after, Paul and Robi discovered their natural musical connection and released their first recording in 2016. Look Ahead is a sublime and majestic duo recording that ushered in strong demand for their jazz-duo concert performances, leading to an appearance at the Leith Summer Festival. Robi Botos has performed with Branford Marsalis, Chaka Khan, and Al Jarreau. He is internationally acclaimed as Oscar Peterson’s current protégé and is the inaugural Jazz Artist in Residence at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto. In 2016 Robi’s album Movin’ Forward won a Juno Award. Robi composed the score for A People Uncounted, a film that documents the struggles and the rich artistry of the Romani people. He has composed music for Canadian feature films, Jean of The Jonses and The Weekend. Robi’s song Budapest, (from Look Ahead) was licensed for the film, Mishka, currently listing 58 million You Tube views. Paul Novotny (MA, PhD candidate) is an esteemed Canadian jazz bassist, composer, music producer, educator, and peer reviewed academic author. He has performed with Cedar Walton, Geoff Keezer, Junior Mance, Kenny Wheeler, Brian Browne, Joe Sealy, Carol Welsman, Jackie Richardson, Holly Cole, Molly Johnson, Barbra Lica, and he played on the multi-platinum selling video game soundtrack CUPHEAD. As a screen-media composer Paul composed themes for CBC National News, CBC The Hour with George Stroumboulopoulos, and CBC News Now. Paul’s association with Joe Sealy has garnered three Juno nominations and their work together on Sealy’s Africville Suite resulted in a 1997 Juno Award win. Paul is an elected board member with the Screen Composers Guild of Canada (SCGC) and has testified to federal standing committees, Heritage, and INDU, about the need for Canadian copyright renewal. Summertime in Leith presents Paul Novotny and Robi Botos in a viscerally interactive concert setting. The sound is stunningly palpable and masterfully crafted in Dolby Atmos, transporting the listener to a picturesque Ontario hamlet, on a balmy midsummer evening, in the middle of a jewel-like sanctuary of an historic Canadian church, surrounded by local folks immersed in the moment. Summertime in Leith is “lightning in a bottle.”
