BIO: Daryl Stogryn graduated from Berklee College of Music in 1981 with an Honors Diploma in Jazz Composition and Arranging. A winner of Berklee’s Woody Herman Jazz Masters award for outstanding contributions to the Berklee Performance Series, Daryl led a 19-piece band as primary composer in Boston for 3 years. He studied jazz composition under Michael Gibbs, Herb Pomeroy, Phil Wilson, and Greg Hopkins, among others. After returning to Canada, Daryl worked as a freelance composer and led an 18-piece rehearsal band in Toronto for 2 years, providing opportunities for composers to test their music. From 1983 to the early 90’s, Daryl was a regular adjudicator and clinician for Musicfest Canada and related music festivals. He had numerous commissions from bands preparing for competition both nationally and internationally.
Growing up in Sarnia, Daryl had many opportunities to connect with some of the big band greats through the Lambton College Big Band Series in the 1970’s. He was able to spend time with great band leaders like Woody Herman, Count Basie, Buddy Rich, Stan Kenton, and Maynard Ferguson. Hanging out at open rehearsals and simply being present with these giants of the big band world would be an inspiration for life. It was Stan Kenton that recommended he apply to Berklee.
In 1989 Daryl began working on behalf of struggling youth in his local area. In the early 1990’s, Daryl formally left the music industry to focus exclusively on the needs of young people. Now, approaching retirement, friends and former music colleagues have encouraged him to dust off the music chops and write again. This is the first concert featuring Daryl’s music in over 30 years.
