The Don Thompson Nonet Sunday, June 22 at 3 pm Concert Hall at Victoria Hall

Don Thompson, one of Canada’s most decorated and beloved jazz musicians, is well known for his work with the Boss Brass, Jim Hall, George Shearing and Diana Panton. He is also an important mentor for young jazz musicians.

Chris Parnis; one of those musicians, has had the opportunity to work closely with Don. “Everyone I respected told me that he would set me straight with music…[w)hen I did my first record, Everything You Could Be (2024), Don encouraged me to resist developing an artistic comfort zone…to continue to grow as a musician/bandleader by leading larger ensembles”.

Don had stepped back from performing. With a wealth of unrecorded and under-performed original music, Don offered Chris the opportunity and challenge of recording and performing the unreleased material. The reigniting of Don’s Nonet created an opportunity for younger players to play alongside their elders.

The Nonet made its debut in May of 2024 featuring former members of Don’s original band, and a current generation of young talents, all of whom look forward to continuing to honour the music of Don Thompson:
