The Steve Holt Trio - three internationally acclaimed jazz musicians who all have a Northumberland connection and who have played together frequently. Their May 12 (Mother's Day!) repertoire will include Jazz standards and original compositions by Steve Holt.

Steve Holt, a piano prodigy at 4, began his professional career at 17, playing clubs in and around Montreal. Steve has built an international reputation as one of Canada's premiere jazz pianists having worked with Archie Shepp, Larry Coryell, Eddie Henderson, Pat Labarbera, James Moody, Eddie "Cleanhead" Vinson, and Michel Urbaniak. Steve studied jazz piano with Armas Maiste, graduating with distinction in 1981 as McGill's first-ever Bachelor of Music majoring in Jazz performance. During this period Steve travelled regularly to New York to study with world-renowned pianist Kenny Barron. Also in 1981, Steve was appointed to McGill's Faculty of Music as instructor of Jazz improvisation. In 1983, Steve produced his debut recording, The Lion's Eyes - a trio on A side and sextet on B side - the sextet including Michel Donato, Bass; Camil Belisle, Drums; Bob Mover, Alto Saxophone; Steve Hall, Tenor Saxophone, and Charles Ellison, Trumpet. The LP won critical acclaim around the world, and was a Juno nominee for best Jazz album that year. Steve spent several years as an active studio musician, and performer/arranger for radio and television commercials. Ultimately, Steve left the big city for the Village of Warkworth where he operated an intimate jazz 'boite' and health food emporium - The Natural - which became a respected venue for many very good jazz players. Dave Young is one of Canada’s musical giants. The list of artists with whom Dave has shared the stage is long and distinguished: the late Oscar Peterson (with whom Dave had a thirty-five year musical relationship), Lenny Breau, Clark Terry, Harry “Sweets” Edison, Joe Williams, Oliver Jones, Kenny Burrell, Cedar Walton, Nat Adderly, Peter Appleyard, Gary Burton, Barney Kessell and James Moody. Dave Young has released a number of excellent CDs as leader: the JUNO winning Fables and Dreams with co-leader Phil Dwyer(Justin Time) and the JUNO Nominated recordings, Mainly Mingus (Justin Time), and on Modica Music, 2009’s Mean What You Say, 2011’s Aspects of Oscar and 2012’s The Dave Young/Terry Promane Octet - Volumes 1 and 2. In addition to performing and recording Dave has been a dedicated jazz educator, at Humber College and The University of Toronto. Dave lives in Toronto and Northumberland where he owns a 'farm' north of Cobourg. Dave has been a magnet for so many great jazz players who have come to view Cobourg as a highly credible jazz town. A 2018 Dave Young-Steve Holt duo concert at The Loft has been a highlight of my career as a jazz presenter.

Saxophonist, Perry White has a distinctive sound “steeped in the tradition of jazz and charged with the energy and experimentation of modern music. The Vancouver native'sstaggering list of career credentials ranges from long-time membership with ‘The Shuffle Demons’ to playing with ‘The Boss Brass’, the Vancouver Ensemble of Jazz Improvisation, Dave Young, CDs (9), John MacLeod Big Band, Kevin Breit, Holly Cole and even the TSO as well as countless other jazz bands and ensembles. Perry has been the recipient of many awards including a Juno, Best Film Score at the Halifax Film Festival and four times the Jazz Report’s Best Baritone Sax in Canada. As well as live gigs, Perry also works behind the scenes on film and television scores and with countless artists on recording projects.
